Wood River Valley writer-photographer duo Michael Ames and Chris Pilaro filed a story from Mackay in Wednesday's The Daily, a national publication available on iPads everywhere.

Link to full story: The not-so-wild, wild West: One of Idaho’s legendary rodeos struggles not to get bucked

MACKAY, Idaho — People say the Mackay Rodeo ain’t what it used to be. Talk to just about any cattle rancher or whiskey slinger in this high-mountain, cottonwoods-and-camper-van, Rocky Mountain town and you’ll hear the same concern. The locals are worried about the future of “Idaho’s Wildest Rodeo,” a 66-year legacy of days of high-wire bull taunting and nights of hard boozing in this isolated, difficult, beautiful place they call home. ...

Your Blaine County Sheriff’s Office would like to stress to all boaters that local rivers are running extremely high right now because of the significant precipitation and melting of snow. Due to the high running of these rivers debris will be floating in the local lakes and reservoirs.

The warmer temperature this weekend may draw boaters to local rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Everyone is urged to use extreme caution if they decide to recreate on local waters. Even though the air temperature may be in the low to mid 70s this weekend, water temperature will likely be less than 50 degrees.

Persons that accidentally fall into the water without appropriate safety equipment will be especially vulnerable to drowning. If you do decide to recreate this weekend, use extreme caution and keep in mind the following:

  • Wear a life jacket at all times while on the water

  • Scout rapids ahead of time and stay within your ability

  • Wear a dry suit or wet suit and appropriate footwear

  • Wear a helmet

  • Watch for floating debris in the lakes...

James Byrd of Boise did the first full descent at high flows of the North Fork of the Payette River. View some great pics of the North Fork kayakers at Mike Leeds' Photography. This freight train of whitewater was once considered unrunnable.

Between Smiths Ferry and Banks, the North Fork has more Class IV-V (expert only) rapids in 15 miles than the Colorado has in its 277 miles through the Grand Canyon.

WildWater North Fork Payette Teaser from Anson Fogel on Vimeo.

"I think that has to be considered one of the hardest pieces of whitewater ever done," said Doug Ammons of Missoula, Mont., an international expeditionary kayaker who's logged many first descents of difficult rivers.

"I believe I'm the only person ever to have paddled it at levels from 6,000 to 7,000 cfs," Ammons said. "It almost never gets that high, and it is so intimidating when it does that people just stand on the side and gape at it."

Goat Lake, off the Alpine Way trail, is a short but challenging hike from the Iron Creek Trailhead near Stanley. The challenge begins after leaving the Alpine Way trail on an un-mapped path leading above Goat Falls into the first of several high basins. The trail has several gravelly, exposed sections across open granite sections. Once above the falls, cross the creek and continue on it's left side the last few hundred feet to the lake, avoiding the fairly treacherous talus field.

The lake is deep and cold, but has rocks perfect a cliff jump to cool down quickly.

This photograph is a two shot stitch, made with a Mamiya 645 medium format digital, converted to black and white using Nik Silver Effects Pro.
