With blue skies, fresh powder and $35 lift tickets, thousands of local and regional skiers and snowboarders enjoyed a fantastic day on the slopes of Sun Valley Ski Resort and a lively apres ski party and raffle at River Run Lodge as part of the new Fly Sun Valley Alliance (FSVA), SKI FOR AIR SERVICE Community Ski Day on Sunday January 22. The proceeds from the lift ticket and raffle ticket sales raised nearly $40,000 to help support FSVA’s efforts to maintain and improve commercial air service to Sun Valley, an economic lifeline for the area’s tourism and other local businesses.
The significantly discounted $35 SKI FOR AIR SERVICE lift tickets were completely sold out in advance and there continued to be strong demand up until the end of the sales period on Saturday, January 21, so only those who got their tickets early were able to enjoy the discounted day of skiing.
“SKI FOR AIR SERVICE DAY was nothing short of a smashing success,” remarked Eric Seder, FSVA Board President. “We raised money for air service, we raised awareness of the importance of air service and what Fly Sun Valley Alliance does to support air service, and thanks to Sun Valley Resort, we were able to offer local and regional skiers an inexpensive ski day at our world-class resort while supporting this important economic cause.” Seder noted however that the funds raised are a small amount of what is annually needed currently to maintain the seasonal summer and winter non-stop flights from Seattle and Los Angeles on Alaska Airlines, and significantly more funding will be needed to both expand the current service as well as secure additional new service from other key markets.
Sun Valley Resort Marketing & PR Director and Fly Sun Valley Alliance Board Member Jack Sibbach was very pleased with the results of this new event initiative. “It was great to see so many local and regional skiers out on the mountain taking advantage of this deal and our terrific ski conditions,“ he commented. “Air service is critical to the Sun Valley Resort and our entire community’s future economic success so it’s wonderful to have the community help support it in this way.”
FSVA congratulates the following SKI FOR AIR SERVICE DAY Raffle ticket winners:

Waller noted all proceeds from the day will support air service to Sun Valley, a critically important economic cause.

The $35 SKI FOR AIR SERVICE lift tickets will continue to be sold through Saturday, January 21, or until the limited number of lift tickets available at participating ski shops are sold-out. Lift tickets will not be available for sale on SKI FOR AIR SERVICE Community Ski Day on Sunday, January 22. Lift Ticket purchases are cash only and not refundable. There is no limit to the amount of tickets an individual may purchase.

“These new Business Transferable Ski Pass options should be very attractive to many different types of businesses in the valley who want to offer their employees the benefit of free skiing on Baldy at a fraction of the cost, “ noted Eric Seder, FSVA Board President. “The new Long Weekend option is designed for those Monday-Friday businesses to allow more of their employees to ski on the weekends. And the new GOLD pass is a terrific value, especially with the designated Company Ski Day that offers free skiing for 50 people, which can be employees, family members, clients, donors or any others the business or organization would like to invite,” he added. Sun Valley Resort is also allowing GOLD pass purchasers to add additional skiers over 50 on their Company Ski Day at the discounted group rate. Seder expressed appreciation to Sun Valley Resort for their continued support and to the other local businesses who have contributed additional perks to the GOLD pass this year.
Seder said the FSVA Transferable Employee Ski Pass program is a significant part of fundraising for support of the winter and summer non-stop flights on Alaska Airlines from Seattle and Los Angeles, as well as other air service development initiatives undertaken by FSVA. He added that the Sun Valley Resort continues to be a key partner in working to sustain and develop air service to Sun Valley.
Jack Sibbach, Marketing & PR Director for the Sun Valley Resort and FSVA Board Vice-President, said that the company was happy to work with FSVA to develop and expand the Business Transferable Employee Ski Pass program to provide more options for more businesses and organizations this year. “These passes are a great way to get employees out skiing, while supporting commercial air service which is so critical to local businesses and our economy,” he noted.

“We are very excited to re-launch the ACCESS SUN VALLEY CARD program with an important new partner, Alaska Airlines,” remarked Eric Seder, President of the non-profit Fly Sun Valley Alliance. “They have offered a fantastic benefit to cardholders – an exclusive discount on flights between Sun Valley and Los Angeles and Seattle which provide a significant savings: $89 one-way to Los Angeles and $69 one-way to Seattle. Certain restrictions do apply*, and seats are limited, but this benefit will literally pay for the purchase of the card itself.”

Seder noted that the ACCESS SUN VALLEY CARD program is designed to boost sales for local businesses while helping raise funding for airline Minimum Revenue Guarantees (MRGs).
“We simply must recognize that the health of our economy is directly tied to the level of air service to Sun Valley and that we, as a community, need to collectively support continued and expanded air service in any way possible, including buying the Access Sun Valley Card, “ said Seder. “The reality is that MRGs are critical for not only maintaining current air service, such as the peak winter and summer Alaska Airlines non-stop flights between Sun Valley and Los Angeles and Seattle, but to secure additional non-stop service from new markets in the future.”
Sun Valley Resort has long been a key partner in air service support and funding. Seder said that FSVA, along with Sun Valley Resort, is also actively involved in financially supporting the Sun Valley Express Boise-Sun Valley van shuttle service, in recognition that Boise is also an important air gateway for many visitors and residents.

Business Leader Emphasizes Organization’s Role in Air Service Support Initiatives
Local business leader Eric Seder, co-owner with his wife Susan, of Sun Valley Shutters & Shades and Fox Creek Interiors, and founding board member and current vice-president of the board of the Wood River Economic Partnership (WREP), was elected president of the board of the Fly Sun Valley Alliance at their meeting in February. The mission of the non-profit Fly Sun Valley Alliance is "to actively pursue and secure improved commercial air and ground service access to the Wood River Valley" The organization plays a key role in supporting air service initiatives by working with Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air to ensure continuation of their daily non-stop winter and summer flights from Los Angeles and Seattle through negotiation and financial support of minimum revenue guarantees, and overseeing contract support for the Sun Valley Express ground shuttle to and from Boise. FSVA also researches new potential air service opportunities and competitive programs, raises funds for support of current and future air and ground service programs, performs economic impact research on air travelers to the valley and more.
“I am honored to take on this leadership role in Fly Sun Valley Alliance because I know how key air service is to our valley’s economy. This organization, working in partnership with Sun Valley Resort, the business community and Friedman Memorial Airport, has provided a tremendous benefit to the community by supporting these non-stop flights. According to air passenger surveys, flights by Alaska/Horizon and Delta/SkyWest into the Friedman Memorial Airport bring in an estimated $35 million local economic impact annually, “stated Seder. Seder also gave special thanks to outgoing FSVA President Maurice Charlat, who successfully led the organization since its inception as a non-profit in 2006. “Maurice has served FSVA and this community so well over the years. I really want him to know how much his dedication and leadership has been appreciated”, remarked Seder.
Seder said that FSVA is working on new plans to secure short and long term funding for air service. “We plan to work on continuing to improve the success of our current flights, but also to aggressively pursue new opportunities for non-stop flights from key markets. As is the case with most other ski resort destinations in the west, and many other smaller communities in general, we will not get that service without minimum revenue guarantees, “he noted.
